Water leaks are a common occurrence and can be anything from a minor nuisance to a complete catastrophe. Whether it is a home, business premises, or an office block – we all want to know how we can monitor our systems for a water leak as the resulting damage can cost huge amounts to fix.
If you believe you have a water leak, you want to locate it as soon as possible and there are a few standard checks you can undertake to try and find out if you have a problem.
- The first step is to ensure that all water in the building is switched off. This means no using sinks, toilets, water tanks, sprinklers, dishwashers etc. All water usage must come to a stop.
- Locate your water meter to see if the leak indicator is moving. There are different types of water meters so if you do not know where yours is located or how to read it, contact your water supplier for assistance. There is usually a dial or wheel on the meter which should only move when water is being used. If when you look at it, it’s moving, you almost certainty have a leak. If you are not sure whether the leak indicator is working appropriately, take a water meter reading, leave it for a couple of hours (without using any water or water appliances), then take another reading. If the water meter has increased, this would again indicate you have a leak.
- In order to determine whether the leak is inside or outside your home, you now need to shut off the main water valve which pumps water into your property, usually found in a garage or basement. Once the valve is shut off check the leak indicator again or, take another meter reading. If the dial remains still or the meter does not increase, then this indicates that the leak is in the house, but if the dial continues to move, then the leak is outside the house.
If you believe you may have identified a leak and have an idea of where it is, now would be a good time to employ the services of a professional. However, if the leak is inside, there are a few further checks you can make:-
- Leaking taps – check all bathrooms, kitchen and utility taps to ensure there are no leaks or drips.
- Check the toilet flush and ensure that the flushing mechanism is stopping completely after the button is released.
- Are there any wet patches or damp floors around or underneath your water appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers etc. Similarly, are there are any damp patches on any walls or ceilings around the building.
